I’m a huge fan of HOLSTEE*. So much so, in fact, I purchased their large decal of the HOLSTEE manifesto. I look at it everyday and so does everyone who enters my home. It’s an amazing reminder of what’s important in life, so I decided to use it to reflect on creative practice. (Note: All sentences in bold are directly from the manifesto.) Try using it as a tool to improve and reflect on your creativity!

How to use a manifesto to reflect on your creativity.

This is YOUR LIFE.

This is your LIFE.

Do what you love and do it often. How much time do you make in your life for the things you love? Do you create space for your creative dreams?

If you don’t like something, change it. I see so many people who feel stuck, trapped in the life they’ve created for themselves. The only thing holding them back is the limitations they place on themselves. How does your thinking limit you?

If you don’t like your job, quit. Quickly list ten things you like about your job. Quick. Quick. Struggling for an answer? There is ALWAYS room to start over (see above).

If you don’t have enough time, stop watching TV. Use your calendar to document how you use each day for an entire week. Conduct a time audit, how do you really use your time?

If you are looking for the love of your life, stop; they will be waiting for you when you start doing the things you love. All I can say about this is take the time to love yourself first. How do you love yourself? What steps can you take towards greater self-love? When we love ourselves we make room for more love in our lives.

Stop overanalyzing, life is simple. I need to carry this one with me everywhere. The simplest answer is usually the right (but not always easy) one. How do you complicate your life?

All emotions are beautiful. Don’t hide from your feelings. Internalized feelings cause heartache, resentment, and even physical illness. Honor where you are and practice mindfulness to be with your emotions.

When you eat, appreciate every last bite. We can often approach food in a gluttonous or rushed manner. Take a moment to consider and appreciate how your food reached your plate. Savor each bite and it may help create better, healthier balance in your diet.

How to Reflect on Your Creativity

Do you savor each bite?

Open your mind, arms and heart to new things and people, we are united in our differences. Life need not be a competition. Try on the other person’s shoes in a difficult situation. Write an article from their point of view. When we can begin to empathize, we see differences fade or turn into a point of celebration.

Ask the next person you see what their passion is, and share your inspiring dream with them. It is through teamwork or shared support of our goals and dreams that we can all rise above. Bring those around you to their “next level” alongside you.

Travel often; getting lost will help you find yourself. Leaving your home country allows you to see yourself. It opens your eyes to the nature of your own nationality. It can open your heart to celebrate difference. If you can’t leave your country, travel in and around your home town. Explore the places you’ve always ignored or overlooked. What new things do you see?

Some opportunities only come once, seize them. Better to make mistakes than live a life of regret.

How to Reflect on your Creativity

Life is often something we take for granted. Remember that the cliche is true. Life is short. Live life fully.

Life is about the people you meet and the things you create with them so go out and start creating. Sharing ideas and brainstorming with others can take your motivation (and theirs!) up a notch. Connect with people and learn. Use those opportunities for creative inspiration.

Life is short. It seems only those who have faced death in the eye really see this. Know it. Have faith their urgency to live life is something you also should embrace.
